Pigeon Facts
Pigeons are intelligent, social animals who are often misunderstood and mistreated. Get to know pigeons better:
Pigeons are clean
Contrary to popular belief, pigeons are actually very clean birds, spending a big portion of their day grooming themselves. The risk of getting any disease from a pigeon is extremely low.
How pigeons play an important role in the eco-system.
- Pigeons contribute to urban ecosystems by acting as seed dispersers, helping clean up waste, and serving as food for predators.
- Pigeon droppings (guano) contribute to soil fertility and can support the growth of plants, enriching the urban landscape.
- Dense pigeon nests can create ecological hotspots by attracting a variety of decomposers and other organisms, contributing to biodiversity.
- Some researchers argue that pigeons, due to their wide range and role in nutrient cycling and shaping urban habitats, can be considered a keystone species in urban ecosystems.
